  Randy
The Construction Worker
Randy is the undisputed boss.  Always has been – always will be.   Every new guy who joins this group of men is “broken in” by Randy.   Has to be that way.   No doubt about it – Randy is the ultimate alpha male.  He is a rugged construction worker and looks it.   He turns heads wherever he goes – the dream of women and envy of men - but he doesn’t give a shit about any of this.   He’s his own man – doesn’t care about his looks.

So we have to rely on Bob’s first impression of him at that pivotal moment [in Chapter 1] when Bob first sees Randy in a seedy Hollywood bar.  It’s the moment that changes both their lives.

His looks - The Construction Worker
Bob looked him over and breathed in the smell of stale sweat. His ragged tank top was stained with it and he looked as if he hadn't showered in a while. He was tough looking, a three-day growth of stubble on his handsome face.

The man was stunning.  Swarthy face, square jaw, unruly black hair, magnificent physique.  The body was evidently a tribute to years of hard manual labor … chiseled pecs straining under the tight tank, bulging biceps, ad shoulders tapering brodown to

the narrow waist of his dusty cargo pants.  He looked as if he could take care of himself – as if didn't give a shit about anyone or anything.

His past – King of the Gypsies

Randy’s anger is legendary – flares up in an instant – and he solves disputes with his fists.   When he is assigned to anger management he slugs the therapist.   Inevitably the shrink (Steve) probes into his past [in Chapter 60].

Randy sighed.  “I knew we’d get round to that.  Look, I’ll give you the Cliffs Notes version of my life and that’ll have to do.”

“OK, let me guess.  Born on the wrong side of the tracks?”

“Hell, where I came from there were no tracks.  Deepest rural Texas.   I was the oldest of six brothers.  We moved around a lot, dirt poor, itinerants ….. gypsies I guess you’d call us.   I was sixteen when my old man went to jail and mom drank herself to death.  I was left to bring up the kids.”

“I knew it,” Steve smiled.  “The King of the Gypsies.”

“Yeah, whatever.  I soon became a tough son-of-a-bitch.  Had to take care of my little brothers.  Protected them like a tiger.  And yes, I did settle all my problems with my fists.  Anyway, the kids grew up and finally I was on my own.  Got married for a while, wife split and I moved out here to L.A.   Worked in construction, fucked a lot of women.”

Randy hesitated.   ““Then ….. in a crummy bar on Hollywood Boulevard I met a guy named Bob.  And my life changed.”  His eyes misted for a moment, then he snapped back.  “Some time after that the fine-looking blonde cop Mark moved in.   Later I met a kid named Pablo, a terrific, tough little guy, who I ended up adopting.  Then there was Darius, who’s now my right-hand man, and Jamie.  There are six of us.”

“And you’re the boss!” said Steve, stating the obvious.
